Stand Night Has Come #5 Roberto AguirreSacasa Books
The end is almost here. This is the next-to-last issue of Marvel's adaptation of The Stand, and I'm sad to see it. It's that same bittersweet feeling of passing the climax of a novel, knowing that the ride is almost over. Over the last few years, Marvel has done an amazing job bringing Stephen King's masterpiece to life. Any fan will instantly recognize the front cover image of Stu crawling up from the wash-out where he broke his leg to see the incandescent glow of a nuclear explosion in the distance. After reaching the novel's climax in the last issue, this month focuses on the falling action section of the plot. Stu escapes the wash-out, but is ironically doomed by a powerful fever. That is, until Tom Cullen, returning to Boulder from his spy mission, finds him and nurses him back to health. I've always loved this part of the book, as Nick's ghost aids Tom in finding medicine to help Stu overcome his sickness. Stu and Tom make their slow way back to Boulder, completing their miraculous quest to rid the world of evil and save their friends from Randall Flagg's army. While the action seems somewhat rushed to me considering that Tom finds Stu and they make it back to Boulder in the space of one issue, I can't complain. The quality is too good. The writing is true to King's novel and the artwork is nothing short of stunning. As with the rest of the series, I greatly enjoy seeing all of these scenes illustrated. The characters are vivid and infused with real emotion, and the settings dazzle with color and detail. Given that the Stephen King name has always held a respectable amount of box office prestige, I always envisioned his books in terms of movies, never wondering how they might translate to graphic novel form. After this series, I'm convinced that much of King's work was made for comics. He grew up a huge fan of comic books, which might account for the great attention to visual detail and description in his books, and which definitely influenced his taste for gory, Tales From the Crypt-style imagery. Next month, to my dismay, The Stand will conclude as Stu and Tom return to deliver their grim news about Larry, Ralph, and Glen, and to discover the fate of Fran's baby, who they fear may be susceptible to the superflu. One more incredible issue to look forward to, and the tale will be told.
